InDesign Assignment: Humane Society Calendar

For this assignment, we were instructed to create a calendar for a local humane society. For this proposal to The Humane Society, we were instructed to prepare 3 sample months of what our calendar design would look like. Per the client's request, each month should contain a picture of a different animal as The Humane Society doesn't ONLY cater to cats and dogs. More information about the client's specifications can be found at the assignment description page.

Below are the three months of the calendar proposal I designed: Calendar Assignment Calendar Assignment Calendar Assignment

For this design proposal, I decided to present the client with a product with no background color. As an aspiring public relations professional, I'm a big proponent of consistent branding across all products and platforms of an organization. According to this client's proposal, there was no access to a website or any of their prior materials and, therefore, I did not want to create a background that would clash with any of their branding. I would have updated the calendar to reflect branding after the initial approval of the design concept by the client.

I chose to create a consistent layout across each month because this is the most visually appealing option for a calendar and would be rather annoying to the viewer if the layout changed from month to month. There is uniformity in the proximity and alignment of each of the elements of the calendar. The coupons are all the same size and spaced apart evenly; the fun facts are aligned with the coupons; and the title, animal picture, month, and calendar portion are in alignment on the left side of the page.

An issue I had was the fact that the coupons were small in size and hard to read on an 8 ½ X 11in piece of paper but I would have rectified that problem when the calendar was transposed to a larger size for print by the client. An 8 ½ X 11in would not be an ideal size for a calendar and I would have advised for them to use something larger and more standard. The spacing of the fun facts is done in a way to make sure that the white space is used efficiently.

For each month, I chose to theme the page on a specific animal. The main picture was a cute, visually appealing picture of that animal. Then, the Fun Facts of the Month were facts about that animal and the two pictures in the fun facts were my attempts at pictures portraying these fun facts. These images were made to be smaller to attract the eye only when the viewer was looking at the Fun Facts so as not to distract from the main animal image and calendar.
